Student Health Services

Welcome to Student Health Services!

Student Health Services (SHS) is excited to partner with you as you begin your transition to college life and continue your journey here at Marywood University. Student Health Services is dedicated to supporting you every step of the way so you can make the most of your college experience. We are committed to helping you thrive during your time here.

Here at Marywood, we believe the goal of college health is not just to treat illness, but to equip students to take charge of their own health. We are here to help you build the skills and confidence to grow from a novice healthcare consumer into a capable and informed one. We believe college health is a support system designed to promote and protect the physical, mental, and emotional well being of college students.

As a holistic health center, we offer:

  • Primary medical care for illnesses, injuries, and preventative needs
  • Physical exams and health screenings
  • Healthy lifestyle guidance
  • Mental health support and guidance
  • Health education
  • Stress management
  • Over the counter medication
  • Medication prescriptions
  • Diagnostic test prescriptions

Student Health Services does not bill insurance or charge a fee for service. Most routine health needs can be met by SHS. If a student seeks after hours care or care at a hospital or urgent care center, fees may be incurred. Students are encouraged to carry a copy of their insurance card and understand how to use their coverage when seeking care.

Student Health is a confidential resource on campus. The information you share with staff is protected by privacy laws and will not be shared without your permission, except in situations required by law, such as a medical emergency or a threat to your safety or the safety of others. We want you to feel free to get the care and support you need in Student Health Services.

All required documentation must be submitted through the Student Health Portal by August 1. Paper submissions will NOT be accepted. Students may use the forms provided in the Student Health Portal, or their healthcare provider may submit their own official history, physical, and vaccination documents.

Students are encouraged to upload their own documents independently. Student Health Services supports students in taking an active role in managing their health care needs. Our goal is to help students grow from novice health care consumers into confident and proficient ones.

    What to Bring!

Don’t forget to bring the items that will help you take care of yourself and stay healthy during the semester! Pack the items you’ll need to manage your health while you are from home, and take a few minutes to review the over-the-counter (OTC) medicines your family typically keeps on hand so you’ll know what to use when you’re on your own.

We strongly recommend getting a seasonal flu shot, as living and interacting closely in a campus community makes it easier for viruses to spread.

    Here are some suggestions:

    • Health Insurance Card
    • Prescription meds in their original bottles
    • Emergency contact list in your phone including health care providers
    • Medical devices or supplies used regularly like epi-pens, inhalers, glucose monitor, heating pad etc.
    • Thermometer

    Common over-the Counter (OTC) medications:

    • Pain relievers/fever reducers: Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
    • Decongestants: Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed-kept behind the pharmacy counter)
    • Antihistamines: Cetirizine (Zyrtec), Fexofenadine (Allegra)
    • Cough Suppressants: Dextromethorphan (often in Robitussin DM, Delsym)
    • Expectorants: Guaifenesin (Mucinex, Robitussin chest congestion)
    • Throat soothers: Cough drops, lozenges, throat spray
    • Saline nasal spray
    • Vapor rubs

    First Aid Supplies

    • Adhesive Bandages (various sizes)
    • Reusable ice pack
    • Elastic/ACE bandage wrap
    • Sterile gauze
    • Tweezer
    • Vaseline
    • Medical tape
    • Small scissors
    • Disposable gloves
    • Antiseptic wipes/soap

What if I take prescription medication?

If you take prescription meds at college, here are the key things to be aware of so you stay safe, compliant and healthy:

    • Bring enough supply. Have at least a 30 -90-day supply when you arrive. Know how and where you’ll get refills (local pharmacy, mail order, or home delivery).
    • Keep medications in their original containers. The prescription label has your name, dosage, and pharmacy information.
    • Understand your dosage and timing. Know exactly how much to take, when to take it, and what to do if you miss a dose. Use phone reminders or a pill organizer to stay organized.
    • Be aware of side effects and interactions. Know common side effects and when to call a doctor. Ask about interactions with alcohol, caffeine, OTCs, or supplements.
    • Store medication safely. Keep them in a secure place, especially if you live with roommates. Consider storing controlled substances in a lock box or small safe. Follow storage instructions (i.e. refrigerate if needed, protect from heat or light etc.).
    • CONSULT WITH STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS!

ALCOHOL SAFETY PLAN FOR STUDENTS ON PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION OR MANAGING CHRONIC HEALTH CONCERNS:

    • Prepare ahead of time. Talk with your personal physician about how to safely handle alcohol use on campus. For example, diabetic students can: (see Dropbox)
    • Know your medications and learn how alcohol interacts with each one
    • Commit to safe choices. Avoid alcohol completely if your medication has a known interaction risk. If you choose to drink with a med that has milder risks, set a strict limit (and confirm with your doctor first).
